I have used two websites with success. Rent.com will list apartments in a geographic area based on city or zip code. Once you have a list that fits your budget and needs, go to Apartmentratings.com. This site rates apartments based on feedback from people who have lived at the apartment. Keep in mind that some tennants may have an ax to grind, but you can get a general impression based on all comments. You can ask the apartment managment about any specific problems reported.

Look on Rent.com (Although the listed rent prices aren’t completely current) You will be able to get information on and see a picture of the property.

      THEN

Check it out at apartmentratings.com. Renters post their opinions and experiences at different locations.

      see above about researching, BUT…

If you do decide on a property that is found on rent.com, make sure you list the website on your application to rent the apartment where it asks about a referral. Rent.com will send you $100 check (you have to go to the site to request it, and they contact your apartment complex). This isn’t a scam – they really sent me a check with no strings attached! It’s free advertising for them.
