Garden Structures – Pergola or Arbour

Garden structures like arbors and pergolas can provide intrigue to your landscape designs. Pergolas and arbors serves as a nice decoration for your garden since it draws the eye aloft. The ways to utilize these structures are way too many to mention, whether its for practical use or just for design.

You may have been wondering if there’s any difference at all between a pergola and an arbor. Though there are no general descriptions on these, an arbor is a small structure arched on top, around 6 to 9 feet on peak. It is often placed over the top in a walkway of a gate. A pergola, on the other hand, has a flat top that is directly perpendicular to the straight sides it rests on. It can range in different sizes, large enough to cover your patio to something smaller that hangs just slightly over a walkway.

I living in Calgary, Alberta Canada and I always try to incorporate an arbor or pergola when I create a Landscape Design Calgary.

Materials for arbors and pergolas vary greatly and can include wood, vinyl, or metal. Wood lends a natural and sometimes rustic look to an arbor or pergola, and can be painted or stained to easily change its appearance down the road. However, even if timber can be economical, it won’t last longer than vinyl or iron. Issues associated when you use wood in your structures includes disintegration and fracturing.

Vinyl, on the other hand, is a great maintenance free option that won’t require painting or staining. This material does not decay or disintegrate not unlike wood. Vinyl is much expensive than wood and its dependable in the course of time. If you decide to go with a vinyl unit, be sure to look for a UV resistant plastic that won’t fade or discolor when exposed to the sun.

Using steel or metal is a good choice because it is strong. Though, you have to choose with caution the type of metal in your structure. Steel and iron rusts easily, and this is real trouble if you choose it as material for your structure. Aluminum is a good rust free metal that is lightweight and still very strong. Choose a material with powder coat finish, it has more durability and it has that fresh paint appearance.

We use all types of materials when doing a Landscape Design in Calgary. It just really depends on what your preference is, no matter where you live.

Building a garden structure is a fine way to provide a focal point in your landscaping background. They will enhance your garden’s aesthetics and add a vertical element to spaces that are usually constructed on horizontal planes. Arbors and pergolas in particular can take a simple garden design and turn it into a graceful and beautiful area to be admired and appreciated.

I have a lot of fun with Calgary Landscape Design, and no matter where you live it is important to take the unique canvass you have available to you to be as creative as possible!
